Should I repair of replace my boiler?

Does your boiler seem to be breaking down every five minutes? Or do you feel it is too unreliable to carry on with? If your boiler has broken down, you may be asking yourself whether you should repair it- or just replace it with a newer model. We've made a handy guide to help you out, so keep reading to find out what we think.

Is your boiler still safe?

This is the biggest question to ask yourself when it comes to your boiler. Newer boilers are likely to have higher safety standards, so you will have fewer worries about gas leaks or fires. However, this doesn't mean your current boiler will not meet these standards. If you call out a gas engineer to take a look at your boiler, they will be able to say whether a simple fix will be enough, or whether your boiler will still be too unsafe to use. If your boiler is unsafe, you should definitely replace it for a newer model.

Is your boiler efficient?

Newer boilers are going to be much more efficient than your current model, due to improved technology and design. Because of this, the initial cost of your boiler will be offset over time by your potential energy savings. However, if your boiler is already relatively new, you may not benefit too much from an upgrade, in terms of efficiency, so a repair may be just as worthwhile.

Is the cost of a boiler repair worth it?

If your current boiler is an older model, repairs are going to be significantly more expensive than repairing a new boiler, as spare parts are harder to come across. Check out a rough estimate for the cost of your repair and decide if it is really worth it. you should also bear in mind that, with an older boiler, the cost of repairs are only going to get higher over time. If the cost of repairing your boiler is relatively low, this may be the better option to go for.

Does your boiler break down often?

Do you find yourself regularly in this position?  If your boiler breaks down very frequently or is constantly running into problems, it could be time to replace it with a more reliable model. The cost of repairs will add up over time and may seem like a waste of money when you finally do have to replace your boiler. As well as this, repairs can be a hassle and another thing to stress over, especially in the winter months. However, if this is your boilers first breakdown (or it happens very rarely) a simple repair may be a better idea.
