What's Causing Your Boiler Noise?
Banging or Rumbling (Kettling)
The most common boiler noise. Caused by limescale build-up on the heat exchanger. Water becomes trapped, overheats, and boils—creating a kettle-like banging sound. This is a serious issue that can damage your boiler if left untreated.
Gurgling Sounds
Usually means air is trapped in the system or there's a problem with the water flow. Bleeding your radiators may help, but persistent gurgling needs professional attention.
Whistling or Whooshing
Often caused by a blocked heat exchanger reducing water flow, or air in the system. It can also indicate a failing pump struggling to circulate water.
Clicking or Ticking
Normal during ignition and operation. However, loud or persistent clicking can indicate a faulty ignition system or a failing relay on the PCB.
Humming
A constant humming often comes from the pump or fan. As these components age, their bearings can wear, causing vibration. The part may need replacing.
Dripping or Hissing
Water dripping inside the boiler casing or a hissing sound can indicate a leak. This needs urgent attention from a Gas Safe registered engineer.
How We Fix Noisy Boilers
Power Flushing
If kettling is caused by limescale or sludge, we perform a professional power flush to remove the build-up and restore proper water flow through the heat exchanger.
Component Replacement
If the noise is caused by a failing pump, fan, or other component, we diagnose the exact part and replace it using genuine manufacturer spares.
System Bleeding & Repressurising
For air-related noises, we bleed the system, check the automatic air vents, and repressurise to the correct level.
