Common Causes of No Hot Water
Faulty Diverter Valve
In combi boilers, the diverter valve switches between heating and hot water. If it sticks, your boiler may heat radiators but not water. This is the most common cause of no hot water in combi systems.
Low Boiler Pressure
If your boiler pressure has dropped below 1 bar, the boiler won't fire up at all. Check the pressure gauge and repressurise if needed.
Faulty Thermistor
The thermistor monitors water temperature and tells the boiler when to fire. If it fails, the boiler won't know when to heat your water.
Airlock in the System
An airlock in the hot water pipework can prevent water from reaching your taps. This can often be resolved by bleeding the affected pipes.
Frozen Condensate Pipe
In winter, the condensate pipe that carries water from your boiler to the drain can freeze, causing the boiler to shut down completely.
Faulty Timer or Programmer
If your timer or programmer has reset or malfunctioned, your boiler may not be coming on when you expect it to. Check the display is showing the correct time and settings.
Quick Checks Before You Call
Before calling an engineer, try these simple checks:
- Check boiler pressure: Is the gauge showing between 1.0 and 1.5 bar? If not, repressurise using the filling loop.
- Check the timer/programmer: Is it set correctly? Has it reset after a power cut? Make sure hot water is scheduled to "On" or "Auto".
- Check the thermostat: Is the room thermostat set high enough to trigger the boiler?
- Reset the boiler: Press the reset button on your boiler. If it fires up but then shuts down again, there's a fault that needs an engineer.
- Check for error codes: Note any fault code displayed on the boiler. This helps us diagnose the issue before we arrive.
